The First aid at work training course is suitable for people who work in higher hazard environments such as construction, manufacturing or agriculture.

It is also ideal for organisations whose risk assessment identifies a need for additional first aid training. This could be due to having employees with a disability or an existing medical condition.

The First aid at work training course provides the comprehensive set of practical skills needed by first aiders in most workplaces. It meets the standards required to help comply with Health and Safety (First aid) regulations.

Topics covered include:

  • The roles and responsibilities of the First Aider
  • Assessing an incident
  • Recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness
  • Assisting a casualty who is suffering from major injury and illness
  • Chest injuries, spinal injuries and anaphylaxis

This course is delivered over 3 full days. The class timings are usually 9am to 5pm. As an entry requirement, all learners must possess language skills equivalent to ESOL qualification at SCQF Level 5 awarded by SQA and be over the age of 16


1)  Practical observation
The practical assessment of learners for the qualification is completed throughout the course delivery. This ongoing assessment will involve learners demonstrating practical first aid skills across a number of areas.

2)  Written/Oral questioning
Learners are required to answer a series of questions ensuring their understanding of the theory content is sufficient to meet the required standard.

3)  Accident Report Form
Learners are required to show evidence that they are able to complete an accident report form. 


Upon successful completion candidates will receive a HABC Award in First Aid at Work at SCQF Level 6.

The qualification provides learners with a valid first aid at work certificate that support the requirements from the HSE: approved first aider for a period of 3 years, after this period learners are required to retrain.
