Follow the official steps below to apply for your SIA licence. You can apply directly on the official website.
What you should know before applying
Application Fee
You'll need to pay the application fee before your application is processed. Some businesses may pay this for you.
Licensing Criteria
The SIA will check your age (18+), identity, qualifications, and criminal record.
Right to Work
They will verify you have the right to work in the UK and check your mental health history for the past 5 years.
Criminal Record
If you have a record, use the "SIA criminal record indicator" on GOV.UK to see if it might prevent you from getting a licence.
Wait 3-5 Days Before Applying
The SIA system can take 3-5 days to sync with your new qualification. Please wait at least 3 days after receiving your certificate before starting your application.
Register for your SIA online account
Registering for an SIA online account is free and only takes a few minutes. Go to gov.uk/sia, click 'Log in to your SIA online account', then 'Register for a Personal Account'.
Fill in the application form
You should only apply for the sector that you are trained in. Fill in the form with your name exactly as it appears on your identity documents.
ImportantDo not apply for a front line licence until your qualification appears on the 'My qualifications' page of your SIA online account.
Submit the application
After you submit your application, the SIA will give you instructions on what to do next. You should follow these instructions carefully.
Keep an eye on your account
You can track the progress of your application in your SIA online account. Regularly check the 'My Messages' page.
Wait for the decision
The SIA will tell you about their decision in writing via email, post, or your online account. If granted, your licence card will be sent in the post.
