The names of the licences can be slightly misleading, leading many people to make the wrong choice and limit their career opportunities. If you are planning to work in Glasgow, Edinburgh, or anywhere across Scotland, understanding the difference between these two badges is crucial.

The Short Answer

If you want maximum flexibility and the most job opportunities, you should choose the Door Supervisor licence.

A Door Supervisor badge allows you to do everything a Security Guard can do, PLUS it allows you to work in licensed premises (places that sell alcohol). A Security Guard badge restricts you entirely to non-licensed premises.

The Door Supervisor Licence Explained

Despite the name, a Door Supervisor badge is not just for "bouncers" standing outside nightclubs on Sauchiehall Street. It is the most versatile and highly sought-after licence in the UK security industry.

Where you can work with a Door Supervisor badge:

• Licensed Premises: Nightclubs, pubs, bars, and casinos.
• Events & Festivals: The OVO Hydro, Hampden Park, TRNSMT festival, or the Edinburgh Fringe.
• Retail: Supermarkets, high street clothing stores on Buchanan Street, and shopping malls.
• Corporate & Industrial: Office buildings, gatehouses, construction sites, and hospitals.

Because a Door Supervisor is legally permitted to work in any frontline security role (excluding CCTV monitoring), almost all employers prefer to hire Door Supervisors over Security Guards. If an employer has a contract that involves alcohol (even a temporary event), they need staff with a Door Supervisor badge.

The Training: The SIA Door Supervisor Course takes 6 days to complete. It includes physical intervention skills and a mandatory Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification. The cost is typically £395.

The Security Guard Licence Explained

The Security Guard licence is far more restrictive. Legally, you are only permitted to work in non-licensed premises. If alcohol is sold and consumed on the premises, you cannot work there in a frontline security capacity.

• Corporate: Office reception desks in the IFSD (International Financial Services District).
