Door Supervisors Top-Up Training

This top-up qualification is designed for learners who currently hold an SIA licence to work as a door supervisor. It is an upskilling course and from 1st October 2021, it has become a mandatory requirement. The course covers ways to recognise terrorism, effective crowd control techniques, as well as updated best practices for security professionals working after the pandemic.

WHAT DOES THIS COURSE COVER?

This qualification consists of the following units:

  1. Principles of Terror Threat Awareness in The Private Security Industry
  2. Principles of Using Equipment as a Door Supervisor in The Private Security Industry
  3. Application of Physical Intervention Skills in The Private Security Industry

DURATION AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

It is essential that door supervisors are able to communicate clearly and effectively. As an entry requirement for this course, all learners must have sufficient reading, writing, speaking and listening language skills. All learners must be aged 18 and over. This course is delivered over two full days. The class timings are 9 am to 6:45 pm.

First Aid
It is an SIA requirement that each learner is sufficiently qualified in First Aid. This upskilling course includes Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification.

ASSESSMENT

Unit 1 – Principles of Terror Threat Awareness in The Private Security Industry
This unit is assessed by a 10-question multiple-choice examination. The examination duration is 20 minutes. Learners must achieve a score of at least 70% to pass.

Unit 2 – Principles of Using Equipment as a Door Supervisor in The Private Security Industry
This unit is assessed by a 5-question multiple-choice examination. The examination duration is 10 minutes. Learners must achieve a score of at least 70% to pass. This unit also includes a practical assessment that involves observation of using communications devices. The practical assessment for each learner must be visually recorded and is recommended to take approximately 5 minutes per learner.

Unit 3 – Application of Physical Intervention Skills in the Private Security Industry

This unit is assessed by a 30-question multiple-choice examination. The examination duration is 45 minutes. Learners must achieve a score of at least 80% to pass. Additionally, observation of each learner performing every technique with an observation sheet And Q/A session to cover critical areas of PI knowledge. The practical assessment for each learner must be visually recorded and is recommended to take approximately 15 minutes per learner.

CERTIFICATION

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive a Highfield Award for Door Supervisors in the Private Security Industry (Top-Up). The qualification is awarded by Highfield Qualifications and sits on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). This qualification is supported by the Security Industry Authority (SIA), which regulates the private security industry.

Successful candidates can then apply to renew their SIA Door Supervisor Licence. This licence should allow the individual to operate as a qualified door supervisor in any part of the United Kingdom.

WHY GET THIS QUALIFICATION

Any business selling alcohol, including small pubs, retailers, large nightclubs, cafés, restaurants, hotels, and sports facilities may need trained security staff qualified as door supervisors who hold an SIA licence. All individuals wishing to work in the private security industry must undertake a recognised qualification before applying for a licence.

Once you have obtained the door supervisor licence, you can work in various places such as pubs, clubs, football matches, events, retail outlets, construction sites and many more. Your working hours can include evening and weekend shifts. Part-time work is very common. You will usually wear a uniform. You will usually be paid around £10 to £15 an hour depending on the place of work.
